Road Signs in Iceland
Road signs may seem obvious when driving in your own country, but they can be confusing when traveling. We compiled a list of the most important and bizarre road signs you will see in Iceland and what they mean.
Tunnel
Make sure your lights are on if you see the sign. It means you are about to enter a dark road tunnel.
Workers Ahead
Slow down when you see this sign to ensure the safety of the workers on the road.
Crosswinds
Both hands on the wheel! Crosswinds can move your car unexpectedly.
Bump
Don’t mess up your rental car, slow down for the bump ahead.
Roundabouts
This sign means there is a roundabout or circle ahead, be prepared to slow down.
Riverbank Ahead
If you see this sign it means to slow down immediately since there is a riverbank ahead. You don’t want to end up like the car in the picture.
Falling Rocks
Driving in the mountains can be unpredictable. Falling rocks are dangerous, especially after heavy rainfall.
Animals
All of these signs are a warning to watch for animals. Sheep are known to roam around, especially in the countryside. Slow down and be aware of your surroundings.
Zebra Crossing
This is not what you think, zebras are not crossing the street. It simply means there is a marked crosswalk ahead.
No Motor Vehicles
Whether you rent a car in Iceland or a motorcycle, you are not allowed where you see this sign.
One-Lane Bridge
This sign means there is a one-lane bridge ahead. If a vehicle is on the bridge, let them over before attempting to cross.
Point of interest
Get excited when you see this sign. It means something cool is coming up and you will probably want to stop to check it out!
Bank
Need to exchange currency or take out cash? Then stop when you see this sign that means bank.
Maximum Speed
This is the maximum speed you should be going and it is not in MPH, it is in KPH. 60 KPH equals 37 MPH.
No Parking
Do not park here if you see this sign, it means parking is prohibited but you are free to stop the car without parking it.
